The annual non-refundable membership dues are $100 per person. Dues are paid at the beginning of each season by check, cash, or online. New members will be asked to provide contact information for the membership roster at the beginning of the season.
Our fall season typically runs September to early December. Our spring season typically runs from March to early June. We rehearse Sundays 6:00-8:30 pm at the United Church in Big Rapids, MI. The artistic director sends out a rehearsal schedule prior to the first fall practice and again before the first spring practice. The first email regarding rehearsals usually contains the titles of music to be rehearsed, general announcements, and important reminders for all members.
The Music Librarian will assign you a permanent folder and provide you with one numbered copy of each title we will be performing. You must keep track of your music until the librarian takes it up after the concert is over. After you receive your music, please take the time to number the measures IN PENCIL. If you lose a copy, you will be asked to purchase a replacement. In the event you choose to leave the group, your music is the property of Voca Lyrica and must be returned to your section leader or the Music Librarian immediately.
When you come to practice, you should have all music to be rehearsed and a pencil for markings. Also consider bringing a water bottle and cough drops. Recorded rehearsal tracks (if available) will be shared with you via email early in the season. You can download those tracks directly to your computer. You are expected to spend time practicing between rehearsals. Members are expected to enter all markings given by the artistic director, either verbally or through the rehearsal emails. The director expects your attention, and conversation should be minimal based on sharing rehearsal information quickly and quietly.
Members are required to use a black performance folder for all concerts. You may purchase one using a link provided by the Music Librarian. All black clothing is required for concert attire. Formality is expected. Black shirts must have a modest neckline and full length or ¾ length sleeves. Black dress pants must reach floor length. No leggings allowed. Black dresses must have modest necklines and be full length or ankle length. You must wear black tights, black pantyhose, or black socks. Black shoes are required. When you consider shoes, note that you will be standing for extended periods of time.
Performing in special concerts is an optional part of the Voca Lyrica experience. We believe travel experience provides members with opportunities they might not have otherwise, as well as builds continued musical excellence and community within the choir. Preparing music for a special concert and performing for new audiences also challenges the choir in new and exciting ways. Most production companies allow for structured payment plans when signing on for a special performance event and payment schedules are given out well in advance.
